Chukar Hunters On-Line

CHUKAR HUNTERS ARE DIFFERENT, so different from our other game birds that they are developing their own cult of hunters—

Charley F. Waterman Hunting Upland Birds

I’m waiting patiently for gobbling turkeys and caddis flies here in Colorado as the snows continue to fall on my Sangre de Cristo Mountains.  Six inches this morning matter of fact. The greenbacks are under several feet of snow…however, it won’t be long ’til I’m tossing dries to my favorite natives, but until then I’ve been reminiscing on my days spent in Idaho with birds & dogs.   Idaho last October 2011 was unseasonably warm and dry.  Chukars were still way up in the rim-rock country Idaho is infamous for.  The  previous day was spent with my brother, Scott, chasing valley quail, pheasants and huns.  What a unbelievable day with the coveys caught out in the sagebrush hillsides.   My cover setterdog Gretchen and Gary Thompson’s long-legged GSP Pepper had over 50 staunch points on valley quail.

Grouse River Gretchen on Idaho Valley Quail

Scott and I were lured by the Siren’s call 2000 vertical feet to get to Lucifer’s birds that morning.  The first covey Scott came upon were scurrying in front of him causing a salivary response like Pavlov’s dogs tempting a ground sluicing…but Scott heartily adores these devil birds, and they roared off the ridge top unscathed to the valley below where we’d just clawed our way from.  The next bevy we saw was flushed by a menacing bird of prey.  Scott and I climbed higher and higher and were surrounded by cantankerous chukars until the storm rolled in.  Nothing like being vertical on talus slopes when it’s a whiteout…specially without skis.  It’s been said many times that a person hunts chukars once for the challenge and from thereafter for revenge.  I can’t wait to even the score!

Recently Pat Wray (author of A Chukar Hunter’s Companion) sent me an email informing me of his new Chukar Hunter’s website and forum.  Pat’s been chasing these birds for many years and has a wealth of chukar knowledge to share.  Anyone one interested in wild chukar hunting should stop in and visit Pat’s site.  Another excellent chukar forum site is Upland Idaho.

Enjoy the Spring weather and let’s count the days until we’re back in the uplands with our birddogs and smooth bores.

The Start of the Crazies

Perfect Colorado weather for a last jaunt across the short grass prairie in search of scaled quail. Bitter-sweetness…the company was grand and the dogs grander!

Plans are drawn and dog purchases are being made for the coming fall! I can hardly wait! Idaho for 2 weeks for certain! Pray for the perfect weather conditions and good carry over!

Gobbling turkeys and tossing dry flies are next on the agenda!

Scaled Quail in a Gale

Today was the opening of Colorado’s quail and pheasant season.  It was a beautiful day on the eastern prairies…minus the 50 mph wind.  The dogs performed near flawless…Gary’s Lilly had a great find which was her first point on wild birds.  The prairies are dry and it was very evident today…the southeast is parched.

Here are a few photos from the day afield.   Hope you all got out today as well!

Gadabout

Gadabout is a person that travels for personal pleasure…which is what I’ve been fortunate enough to be doing the past 10 days in southern Idaho in search of birds with dogs!

Below are a few preview photos from Idaho….much more to follow when I return to Colorado next week.

BLM Nomads

I have an extreme dislike for politicians.

Unfortunately…One of my favorite grouse species is the most political bird in North America.

The Greater Sage Grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) or the spiny-tailed pheasant as Lewis and Clark described them in 1806 once inhabited 16 Western states and 3 Canadian providences.   Their historic distribution has decreased significantly over the past 100 years due to destruction of the Sea of Sage that once was predominant in the American West.  Reports of population reduction as high as 85% in certain regions are blamed by many components such as wild fires, draught, West Nile Virus, Coccidiosis, Giardiasis, loss of habitat (some 80 million acres of sage brush), over grazing of our public lands, roads and fences, urban sprawl, wind power and gas/oil exploration and development…the list goes on ad nausea.  Researches, ranchers and politicians will never agree on the status of the Greater Sage Grouse, but their listing on the Endangered Species Act is inevitable.

I could get on a soap box and rant like a heretic about the Bureau of Land Mis-Mangement, piss-poor real-estate deals where subdivisions were placed on known leks, ranchers without range management skills, etc, etc, etc…but that’s not what Setter Feathers adheres to.

The North American Grouse Partnership  is a conservation group that I would highly recommend joining to anyone who adores the prairies and grouse species which inhabit them.  Please donate today!

Greater Sage Grouse season opened in Colorado on Saturday September 10th 2011.  Sterling and I migrated north to pursue these glorious bombers out on their Sea of Sage…with two minor stops in route.   We chased blue grouse at 8,500 ft for first part of the morning in typical Colorado September weather.  Gretchen had a very nice find on a covey of blue grouse on a ridge way above Sterling and I.

Our Second detour was for mountain sharp-tails (aka Columbian Sharp-Tailed Grouse)…when we reached the covert, it was 80 degrees and too hot for the dogs…our success here was one wild flushing sharp-tailed grouse and plenty of exercise.

We arrived at our destination in time for a wonderful dinner and hotel happy hour…

Saturday morning was picture perfect.  Gep had a nice point on two male sage grouse, and Sterling was able to accomplish a goal on his bucket list by harvesting a trophy male that was shipped today to his taxidermist.  The dog work was splendid and the company can’t get much better.  I love these birds and the environs they reside.
